Poachers' by Tom Franklin is the story of three Gates brothers. They live in a town, off the land, where people are dying. The story emphasizes on the attitude of three boys after they are left alone in that part of the world. It depicts the tragedy of boys, who find themselves in the final retribution after dropping the laws of man and adopting those of nature.
The story goes on to show south Alabama's natural looks and it's industrial locality. It reveals the forests, bogs and rivers, lumber mills, power plants and chemical factories. Franklin shows the state being poached. Iron and steel of pipes, tank, drum and pump replaces the natural mystery of the woods.
Poachers do not show the positive attitudes or normality in the society but the story shows a hopeless tale of three half-brothers, sons of a father, who committed suicide. They make their living hunting illegal game, and then killed a warden when he confronts them over it. The story is gloomy and evocative and the most distinctive and reminiscent piece ever read in fiction. However, this does not seem to be heroic. The reactions of these brothers seem to be funny and comical at times and they behave more like living in an animal world. They do not show higher logical behavior and conduct of a man as distinguished from the animal world. The brothers, poaches on the society.
Though it emphasizes the true image of southerners' area, it is too much embellished with the injustice and irony in the society and portrays irresistible corruption faced in daily life that one might encounter. In the story, the characters and the situations are portrayed quite fuzzy, and the right and wrong are made unclear and vague.
